Breeding Mice as Petfood.

Breeding mice for sale to pet shops (as snake food) can be quite a fun project as well as earning a small income for the breeder.
To set up and breed mice does cost a little. The main costs are the purchase of a large glass fishtank as well as two or three smaller breeding tanks. You will also need a constant supply of wood shavings, some small hollow
"toys" and a supply of newspaper, plus a good supply of guinea pig or rabbit food and some ball bearing water feeders. The tanks you use need to have lids (preferably with small air holes). I used some thin plywood and hinged it to the tank for ease of use. You can use whatever you have on hand. Place about 5cm thick of wood wool in the bottom of the tanks and then put in the toys and some scrunched up newspaper. The news paper will be chewed by the mice and used for nesting.
The mice you choose for breeding in the first place obviously need to be of both sexes but what they look like is unimportant as you will only use these for a short time and then sell them ( so that you dont have a cross breeding problem).
The gestation period for mice is a short 21 days so it won't be long before you have more than your first two mice. They usually bear from 6 to 14 pups but inevitably some die and only about 60-70% survive long enough to be sold. Don't worry about having to dispose of the dead mice as the parents actually eat them.
You can sell them after about 3 weeks and before long you will have plenty of breeding pairs. Don't put any more than one male in a tank with females as they will kill each other rather quickly. But if you plan well you should be able to sell the excess males and end up with a rather productive colony.
You need to clean the tanks weekly and use new wood wool and newspaper. This is probably the hardest part of the whole breeding regime. Cleanliness is vital as the smell will become overpowering after only a short time.
Keep up a constant supply of food and water and thats about all you have to do. You can expect to get between $1 and $1.50 per mouse and you usually (believe it or not ) have trouble keeping up with the demand.
So if you are seriously interested in this, give it a go. I wish you well in your endeavours and hope you can make some money at the same time.
